Azulejo Earrings
$56.00
Swirling symmetrical handmade beaded gold earrings inspired by Portugal’s azulejo tiles – in three delicious colours.
Handmade with
- Miyuki Delica glass seed beads in galvanised metallic Duracoat, opaque rainbow, pearl lined azure and Ceylon finishes
- 14ct gold-filled earring hooks
Walk down any of the steep, winding cobblestone alleyways in Lisbon or Porto and you’ll see different coloured ‘azulejo’ tiles covering the facade of each house you pass.
Feature walls of hand-painted blue and white azulejo tiles are everywhere in Portugal too. They tell historical and religious stories and feature cherubs, flowers, branches, birds and animals.
Our handmade beaded gold and silver Azulejo Earrings are inspired by the graceful, curving lines of hand painted azulejo tiles.
They feature one continuous line of glass seed beads curving into symmetrical loops around a central diamond shape. They have tiny ornamental club shapes on each side and metallic gold highlights in the centre.
This graceful and flowing design comes in three gorgeous colours – periwinkle, raspberry sorbet and turquoise – and for a limited time we have turquoise with silver highlights and sterling silver hooks – on SALE!

Care instructions
To keep your pieces looking fresh, polish gently with a soft cloth. Avoid contact with sweat and chemicals, and allow your perfume to dry before putting your pieces on.
Store your pieces away from direct sunlight and with care to avoid scratches from other jewellery.
We weave our beads with super strong gel-spun polyethylene thread so you don’t have to worry about damaging them when you bend them.
All sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time as it oxidises. Standard silver cleaner that you can buy at supermarkets and jewellers is excellent at bringing sterling silver back to its original bright lustre; however, it will damage the beads with strong rubbing. When you clean our pieces with silver cleaner, take care not to rub it over the beads – contact on the beads without rubbing is fine.
Please note: We’ve carefully designed our necklaces and bracelets using the strongest materials and techniques we can find, but we can’t solder the jump rings because we’d melt our gorgeous beads.
We recommend our necklaces and bracelets for grown-ups only, not for children.
All of our pieces are protected by our 12-month warranty provided they’re worn as intended – enjoy your bracelets and necklaces for day to day wear but protect them by taking them off for sports or any kind of manual labour. We’ve carefully designed our gorgeous pieces to give you many years of enjoyment.

More FAQs
What does gold-filled mean?
Gold‑filled is made of a solid layer of gold which is mechanically bonded to a base metal, usually sterling silver. The gold layer in gold‑filled jewellery is 5 to 10 times thicker than gold plating and looks the same as solid gold.
Even with daily wear, gold‑filled jewellery can last from 10 to 30 years. Up to 10 times thicker than gold plating but a fraction of the price of solid gold? We think gold‑filled is pure genius.
What does 14ct gold mean?
Gold is quite a soft metal and is generally alloyed (mixed) with other metals like copper and silver to make it more durable for jewellery making. The purity of gold is measured in carats (spelled karats in the US). Pure 100% gold is called 24 carat gold, shortened to 24ct (or 24K in the US).
Different countries have different standards of gold purity. In Australia you’ll most commonly see 9 carat and 18 carat, but 24 carat is rarer. Nine carat means it’s 9 parts gold out of 24, or 37.5%, and is stamped with a tiny 375 so it can be identified. Eighteen carat gold means it’s 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75%, and is stamped 750.
Our gold at Sugarberry Shimmy is mostly manufactured in the US where 14 carat is the most common gold purity. If you use a jeweller’s eye loupe or a magnifying glass, you’ll see a tiny 1/20 14K stamped on your earring hooks. That means they’re 14 carat gold‑filled and the gold layer makes up at last one 20th of their weight.
See above for more on what gold‑filled means.
Is rose gold plated?
Nope, rose gold is not plated, it’s real gold. All gold that is not 24 carat is an alloy (mix) of gold and other metals – see above for more on that. For rose gold, that soft pinky colour is achieved by mixing more copper and less silver in the alloy.
Our rose gold jewellery is 14 carat rose gold‑filled, meaning it’s made of a solid layer of 14 carat rose gold which is bonded to a base metal so it’s extremely durable. See more on what gold‑filled means above.
Bonus question: Is white gold plated? Yes! White gold is an alloy of gold and silvery‑coloured metals like silver and palladium. White gold is naturally quite dull, so commercial white gold jewellery is often plated with rhodium, a bright silver‑coloured precious metal. Rhodium plating wear offs over time, especially for rings that you wear a lot, so you’ll need to keep re‑rhodium plating your white gold jewellery to keep it looking sparkly white. Our silver‑coloured jewellery is sterling silver, not white gold.
Can I get my jewellery wet?
Yes! We use beads made by the Japanese brands Miyuki and Toho for all our pieces, and these are considered the best quality seed beads worldwide. The beads come in different colour and different finishes like silver‑lined, lustre and rainbow, and they all have different grades of durability – that is, how long the colour will last.
We’ve carefully selected the most durable colours and finishes to use in our pieces so you can wear them for years to come.
Gold, rose gold and silver are all absolutely fine to get wet too.
Have a look at our care instructions above for more on looking after your pieces.
